کتاب The Stranger اثر ماندگار Albert Camus می باشد که نخستین بار در سال ۱۹۴۲ منتشر شد. مردی به نام مرسو در مراسم خاکسپاری مادرش شرکت می کند و در عین حال هیچ تاثر و احساس خاصی از خود نشان نمی دهد. مرسو به عنوان انسانی بی اراده در مسیر پیشرفت زندگی ترسیم می شود. او هیچ ارتباط عاطفی بین خود و دیگران برقرار نمی کند و در بی تفاوتی و پیامدهای حاصل از آن زندگی می کند. او از اینکه روزهای زندگی اش را بدون هیچ تغییری در عادت هایش سپری می کند خوشحال است. تا اینکه به اشتباه مرتکب قتل می شود… بخش دوم کتاب The Stranger به محاکمه مرسو در دادگاه اختصاص یافته است. بیگانگی مرسو با زندگی، او را تا پای مرگ می کشاند. Albert Camus در رابطه با این رمان می گوید : در جامعه ما هرکس در مراسم خاکسپاری مادرش اشک نریزد، یعنی در معرض خطر مرگ قرار دارد.

About the Author

Born in Algeria in 1913, Albert Camus published The Stranger–now one of the most widely read novels of this century–in 1942. Celebrated in intellectual circles, Camus was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1957. On January 4, 1960, he was killed in a car accident.
